Astana, Kazakhstan – Mobile Creators, authors of The Great Coffee App and The Great Photo App, just released Pomodororo 1.0, a productivity timer loosely based on the “pomodoro technique.” The timer was developed for internal use but turned out well enough to be on par or better than similar timers on the App Store. Color tagging (multiple colors require a an additional in-app purchase) and detailed statistics pushes it a head above the competition.

The Pomodoro technique is a well-known method for increasing productivity by allotting set amounts on time to narrowly focused tasks, separated by mandatory “rest” times. It allows the person using the method to avoid distractions during the work sessions, while giving an opportunity to “decompress” and become more aware during the rest periods. Because of this awareness, pomodoro technique also helps preventing burnout that is frequently caused by working for hours without rest.

Working on long-term complex projects, a small team at Mobile Creators realized a need for a tool to keep track of time in a way similar to the pomodoro technique. This need is felt by many people, which led to creating one the technique itself and a variety of different timers, starting with the nominal “pomodoro” (a simple mechanical kitchen timer in a shape of tomato) and up to sophisticated timers for smartphones which are widely available on app stores.

“As is usually the case with such tools, everyone needs a different combination of ease-of-use and depth of features,” explained Baglan Dosmagambetov, associate at Mobile Creators. “our team could not find quite the right balance with the existing timers so we created our own. The timer turned out to be rather good and decision was made to polish it up and release to the iOS App Store.”

Besides the minimal yet full featured time tracking UI, Pomodororo is distinguished by advanced statistics which tracks individual sessions as well as summary statistics for the days the timer was used. Together with color tagging, this allows for tracking various types of tasks at the same time. Another important feature of the app is that it supports multitasking on iPad, including Slide Over and Split Screen views. The counting down animation has also been optimized to minimize the use of resources on the device when timer is visible.
