Reston, Virginia – Software and Computer Systems Company, LLC, (SCSC) has released SpotOff 2 with Spot-O-Meter 2 and Spot-O-Meter Mini for the Mac OS X operating system. SpotOff 2 is an outgrowth of the company’s original product, SpotOff. The new version of SpotOff allows a user to control not only meta data server (mds) problems associated with Spotlight, but those associated with Time Machine as well. In addition, the original Spot-O-Meter has been re-vamped and comes in both a standard sized version, as well as a new “mini” version.

“Quite honestly, we’re somewhat surprised SpotOff has turned into SpotOff 2,” stated Bill Wagner, the company’s president. “The original version of the product was intended to be used by people running Leopard, primarily on systems like Aluminum PowerBooks and G4 iBooks. On those older systems, the incredible CPU and I/O loading Spotlight indexing could induce on a system frequently had an adverse effect on the battery life, and also often caused the systems to overheat causing the fans to kick on in high speed. We thought we would release the original version, keep it on the market for a few months as a convenience for users with old systems, then orphan the product. We didn’t expect this to be a ‘hot’ seller, but the demand is apparently there. We beefed the product line up and enhanced it. It seems that indexing problems with Mountain Lion and Mavericks based systems are much more common than we anticipated.”

“SpotOff 2, unlike its predecessor, doesn’t just do simple Spotlight indexing control. SpotOff 2 can control indexing by suspending and reviving it, unloading and reloading the mds process itself, and control some of the aspects of Time Machine that may be problematic, if not down right mysterious to end users. We made the standard version of Spot-O-Meter a little smaller and added the ability to launch SpotOff 2 from it, and we added a new, miniature version of Spot-O-Meter. With the new versions, a user can easily tell when mds indexing is out of control, and then turn it on and off as needed. We think users will be quite happy with the new release. The update is free for all users of the original version of SpotOff, and Spot-O-Meter may be downloaded for free from our web site without SpotOff 2.”

Pricing and Availability:
SCSC has indicate that the price for SpotOff 2 with Spot-O-Meter 2 and Spot-O-Meter Mini is $10.95 (USD). Both versions of Spot-O-Meter can be downloaded from the company’s web site without SpotOff at no cost. Previous users of earlier versions of SpotOff have been e-mailed instructions to download the new version at no cost.
