Perg, Austria – Ergonis Software today released PopChar X 8.1, an improved version of the company’s award-winning tool for finding and inserting special characters and exploring fonts. Just about a month after the release of the major new version 8.0 of PopChar X, Ergonis did more work on PopChar, refining the newly introduced features and adding support for the new Unicode 10.0 standard.

PopChar 8.0 introduced the possibility to create custom layouts and link fonts to preferred layouts. This allows, e.g., to link the Apple Color Emoji font with the new built-in Emoji layout. PopChar 8.1 introduces additional search keywords for emoji characters, making it even easier to find your desired emoji characters.

PopChar 8.0 also added support for ligatures – a secret feature of many fonts that translates adjacent characters into aesthetically pleasing forms. PopChar finds all ligatures that are available in a font and shows them in a separate section at the bottom of the character table. PopChar 8.1 comes with some enhancements under the hood, leading to a faster collection of ligatures with reduced memory needs. It also improves stability during extraction of ligatures from corrupted fonts as well as from certain fonts on macOS 10.6.

PopChar X 8.1 supports Unicode 10.0, the most recent major update to the Unicode Standard. Unicode 10.0 adds over 8,500 characters, for a total of 136,690 characters. These additions include four new scripts, the Bitcoin sign and 56 new emoji characters. The new Unicode standard has been defined only recently, and fonts that fully support it have yet to be developed, but PopChar 8.1 is already prepared for releases of fonts that contain the new characters.

PopChar X 8.1 finally makes the otherwise invisible system font AppleSystemUIFont accessible in the font list on macOS El Capitan and newer and offers further enhancements and improvements. Visit Ergonis Software’s website to learn more about the changes in this release and to download the new version.

PopChar solves a problem faced by every technologist and multi-lingual worker. Inserting special characters into application documents can be frustrating and results in a steady loss of productivity. With PopChar, thousands of special characters are only a few clicks away. Just pop up the PopChar window, click the desired character, and the character appears in your current document right away.

Besides PopChar X 8.1, Ergonis also released KeyCue 8.5 today, a maintenance release of their company’s highly acclaimed keyboard shortcut cheat sheet, making KeyCue compatible with current preview versions of macOS High Sierra and improving compatibility with FileMaker 16.
