Manchester, United Kingdom – In late July 2014, the Hourglass app was released with the aim of helping its users’ make efficient use of their time. The concept of the hourglass has been around for centuries but this app drags the humble sand timer into the 21st century. Offered on the marketplace as a free app, the creators of Hourglass intentionally generated little publicity for the app’s initial release and instead observed the organic demand for their product. With 4,000 downloads in Hourglass’ first week, it is fair to say there was serious interest in their revamped version of a classic timer.

The Hourglass app is designed to help its user keep a precise track of time. Whether this be used to segment a workout in the gym effectively or allow the optimum amount of time for your cup of tea to brew: the Hourglass timer will ensure the user spends the precise amount of time allocated to a task. With so many of us having to-do lists as long as our arm, Hourglass is an app that ensures each task properly receives the time it deserves.

The version of Hourglass released in July already contained features that its 8th Century counterpart could only dream of. It is possible to categorise your various timers and have them ready to go when you arrive at the next task on your to-do list. You can breakdown tasks such as your “Workout” into sub-tasks, “push-ups, sit-ups, squats…” and truly maximise your time in the gym. But the team behind Hourglass haven’t stopped there, as a spokesperson for the app explained “Our users kept giving us valuable feedback, and we listened. In the future we will implement sound customisation, another popular request.” So with the input of the thousands of users currently adhering to their forty minute “Power Nap” timer and whatever else may feature on their day’s to-do list, a new and improved version of Hourglass has been released.

The new version of Hourglass now allows the app to run in the background – freeing the user to access other apps on their iOS device – as well as a redesigned swipe interface. Fans of the app will be able to improve the capabilities of the free app by making in-app-purchases offering extra colours and sounds to enhance Hourglass’ features.
