Available on the iTunes Store, Legal Flyer aims to protect homeowners from rogue drones. According to the new FAA proposed rules, drone operators need permission to fly over private property. Legal Flyer provides drone operators a permission slip to fly and a property release to allow videographers and photographers necessary permission to fly and film.
“The app is a tool for drone operators to get necessary permissions, as well as, inform and educate the public on their privacy rights. We hope through informed consent more citizens feel comfortable with drones, while more videographers are able to fly homes,” says Paul Aitken Chief Pilot with DroneU.
The app not only complies with FAA rules, but also more relevant FCC rules and privacy laws. Many citizens have concerns of privacy and most individuals are unaware they own the airspace above their home, thanks to Causby v. United States we know that we have rights to up to 83 feet. This app will help bridge the communication gap from drone pilots and worried citizens. Example, if a realtor needs to sell a home, the pilot still needs permission to fly the home and surrounding airspace.
The app was the idea of two friends, Paul Aitken of Ride Media and Jason Bache of Nerds Limited. Jason states, “Legal flyer is a timely synthesis of existing technologies which empower pilots to get the permission they need to fly and film the properties they want.”
The app creates property releases and flight permission slips for pilots, shareable via PDF or any application that can read PDFs. Manage, store and share vital documents.

Legal Flyer became a production of an idea between Nerds Limited and Ride Media. Upon leaving the NAB 2014 last year we realized few individuals knew about their legal protections, and few pilots were obtaining flight permission to fly over private property. Problems were bound to happen. Our hope was that the app would bridge the communication from operators seeking to fly, and concerned citizens, worried about their privacy rights.
