Edmonton, Canada – Pyxwise Software, the maker of the Simplex Spelling Phonics 1 and 2 apps, has had its educational methodology validated by an academic study which showed an average improvement of 1.9 grades among children who regularly used its iPad apps.

The 2014 study, carried out by Dr. Linda Chmiliar and Serena Seeger at Athabasca University, followed 23 students with learning disabilities who used the Simplex Spelling series of apps for 10-15 minutes a day for approximately 1-2 days a week over an 18-week period. Students took the Schonell Spelling Test at the beginning and end of the research period, which revealed an average rise of 1.9 grade levels among students involved. The largest grade improvement was 4.4 grade levels.

Pyxwise Software is at the forefront of a new trend in education: using tablets and apps to make education more fun and effective. Simplex Spelling apps use a systematic phonics-based approach which is backed by pedagogic research. The apps use bright colors, spoken audio, sound effects and game-style rewards to make them as engaging as possible for children. Pupils involved in the Athabasca study described Simplex Spelling apps as “cool” and “fun” – words rarely used to describe traditional methods of teaching spelling.
