“If your child loves the medieval times then you have to check out Sticker Play: Knights, Dragons and Castles,” recommends Super Mommy to the Rescue (28 Mar 2014). “This is an amazing app that we seriously could spend hours playing. The possibilities are endless.”

Sticker Play: Knights, Dragons and Castles contains 5 different scenes where children can create their battles. After choosing a scene, kids can select from 115 different characters and medieval items to populate their scene. The choice of characters include knights in a variety of poses, a king, a queen, jousters, trumpeters, dragons, and many others. There are also several different medieval items including catapults, cannons, tents, flags, and battering rams. All of the characters and medieval items will play a relevant sound effect when tapped. They also include an animation. For example, the catapult tosses rocks when tapped.

“Jump App is well known for putting out quality apps that are open ended and stir creativity and imagination, and Sticker Play is one of my new favorites,” says Jo Booth of Teachers with Apps (27 Mar 2014). “With all the pressures in education today, we tend to be goal oriented or data driven, and it is refreshing to see apps such as this that push the boundaries to think outside the box. If planning a PBL on medieval times or myths and legends, I would certainly consider using this app to plan out play visually, especially for costumes and sequence of events.”

Sticker Play: Knights, Dragons and Castles allows children the ability to easily and intuitively manipulate the stickers. After selecting a sticker from the menu at the top of the screen, kids can move the sticker by simply dragging it in position. Each sticker can be resized by pinching it to make it larger or smaller. To flip the sticker around, kids can simply tap the image twice. When the child leaves the battle scene, all of the stickers are saved so the child can pick up from where they left off. Kids can also save screenshots of their battlefield to their device.

“I believe the real value of the app is in its opportunities for language and literacy development,” comments Sarah DeBellis of The Appy Ladies (27 Mar 2014). “A lot of discussion can take place while children are ‘playing’ in the scenes, and the variety of medieval props and characters means there is a lot of opportunity for vocabulary development. Children who have difficulty with writing activities may find it easier to create a story as a series of scenes first. Although this app is aimed at younger children, I can see it being of use to older children with special needs. The subject matter is historical (with a bit of fantasy tossed in) and interesting, and the stickers and scenes are not too childish for older students.”

Sticker Play: Knights, Dragons and Castles features a Parental Control section that allows adults to control the sound, screenshots, and the ability to clear all scenes. Social media and external App Store links are listed in this Parent Control section and are, therefore, inaccessible to kids. There is also a series of illustrations that demonstrate how to manipulate the stickers for reference.

“If you child likes to play with knights, this is the perfect app for them!” says Sebastian Bachorzewski, founder of Jump App. “Sticker Play: Knights, Dragons and Castles has no rules – only free play and great fun! Kids can really use their imagination and cultivate endless possibilities as they create their medieval battlefields. It’s a great toy for every little knight. An Android version will be released very soon.”
