Pfaeffikon, Switzerland – Power App is proud to announce an update of OCR Scanner, their app for iOS devices to scan documents, bills, receipts and basically any written document to save them on the device and convert the written content into editable text using Optical Character Recognition.

OCR stands for Optical Character Recognition, which is used in larger scale for data entry, automatic key extraction for insurance documents, extracting contact information to add them into a list, book scanning or making electronic images of printed documents searchable, which are just a few applications for Character Recognition Software. With the increased camera quality and processing power of modern mobile devices OCR is another technology that has become available on-the-go.

“Travelling a lot and collecting bills and receipts was a nuisance to me ever since, and having to keep all these little sheets of paper where bills and receipts are printed on made it even more annoying. Typing all the numbers and text to have it available for accounting made it even worse. With a tool that lets me scan that stuff and having the text ready to edit afterwards, turns at least the typing part a copy/paste job. Business trips are still not that funny, but getting rid of little annoyances of course helps a lot. Carrying a Scanner with OCR Capabilities with me was of course not an option, but I always have my iPhone with a camera in my pocket anyway” explains Christian Schaffner (CEO of Power APP) his motivation to develop OCR Scanner for iOS.

OCR is a plain forward device with the main focus of scanning documents of all kind, and bringing text in these documents to an editable format using Optical Character Recognition techniques. Bringing up the help of the app shows some information that makes Optical Character Recognition more efficient, like correct lightning, correct choice of paper type and more.

Being an advanced technique any Scanner with OCR Capabilities needs a modern camera in order to be able to catch a picture of sufficient quality, which is clearly pointed out in the apps description in the App Store where it is mentioned that OCR is not working on older devices, and that at least an iPhone 4 or newer is needed for sufficient results.
